What is Depression?

Depression is a common mental illness that negatively affects how you think, the way you feel and how you act. Depression can affect anyone at any stage of their life. You may be young or old, an introvert or an extrovert, shy or socially active, wealthy or poor, male or female. The symptoms of depression can vary from mild to severe and can make it difficult or impossible to carry on with daily life responsibilities. It can disrupt relationships, careers, daily household domestic duties, your finances and self-care. Individuals suffering from Depression may have a variety of symptoms listed below.

How you might be thinking:

  • “Everything is going wrong”
  • “Why is this happening to me”
  • “I am no good”
  • “It’s all my fault”
  • “Life is too hard”
  • “I just can’t be bothered”
  • Thoughts of self-harm
  • Thoughts of suicide

How you might be feeling:

  • Sad
  • Anxious or irritable
  • Frustration or Anger
  • Guilt
  • Shame
  • Isolated or lonely
  • Worthlessness and hopelessness

How you might be feeling in your body:

  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Headaches
  • Brain fog/ fatigue
  • Change in appetite

How your behaviours may change:

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Sleep disturbances- sleeping too much or too little
  • Social withdrawal
  • Lack of self-care
  • Difficulty attending work, university or school
  • Increase of appetite
  • Decrease of appetite
  • Increase in alcohol/ substance intake
  • Self- harm
